The Graduate Certificate in Public History
The Graduate Certificate in Public History is designed for students who hold a B.A. or B.S. and wish to gain training in public history without completing the full M.A. in History. The certificate is well-suited for individuals who are already working—or volunteering—with historical agencies and cultural institutions and who want to develop practical skills to serve their organizations better.
Students complete 12 credit hours of public history coursework, including HI 665, Public History. The remaining 9 credit hours may be selected from a range of courses—such as digital history, historic preservation, museum and archival administration, and collections management—allowing students to create an individualized program of study aligned with their professional goals.
The Graduate Certificate in Public History may be completed fully online.

Students may choose between two tracks—U.S. History or Non-U.S. History—with all required and elective courses offered as 600-level graduate seminars. With the Department Chair's approval, students may transfer up to 6 credit hours of 600-level graduate credit from another program toward the certificate.
